According to a survey from the HRSA, more than 5.3 million adolescents had a diagnosed mental or behavioral health condition in 2023 - the most common being anxiety, although 8.4% also had depression. With more and more families looking for local inpatient programs, Mission Prep's guide details what to expect and tactics parents can use to get the most out of the treatment.
"We're committed to preparing teens for the challenges of life and giving families the fresh start they need," a spokesperson states. "With this in mind, we treat the entire family system - allowing you to address the challenges of your children in a safe, sustainable way."
The guide first focuses on the first 72 hours after admission, which is typically the most emotional time for both teens and parents. During this period, teens often express a desire to leave and may exhibit heightened emotional distress. To help families address these challenges, Mission Prep offers direct support from a dedicated team that includes a family therapist, clinical mentor, and program director.
Within the program, teens follow a structured daily schedule covering academics, therapy groups, and physical activities like yoga, hiking, and boxing. Meals are shared as a community and often incorporate skill-building activities like cooking lessons.
Throughout the program, parents receive regular updates from the medical, psychiatric, nursing, and therapy teams. Weekly check-ins with a clinical mentor help keep them informed, and they’re also given pre-written scripts to support emotionally challenging conversations with their teen.
Mission Prep also supports weekly family therapy sessions that keep parents actively involved in their teen’s healing and progress. Teens can call their parents daily for 5-10 minutes, with staff available to help them process their emotions after calls. Families can visit weekly, with video calls also being an option, and may request outings after the first week to begin slowly returning to normal family activities.
