In December 1944, Stuehmeyer, then only eighteen, was deployed to Marseilles, France, as a member of Canon Company C with the 23rd Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Rainbow Division. During his service, Stuehmeyer would see action in France, Germany, and Austria. He earned the first of his three Bronze Stars during the Rhine Offensive. In April 1945, Stuehmeyer along with the 42nd Division helped liberate 30,000 prisoners being held Dachau, a concentration camp created by Adolf Hitler.
