-- Portland’s White House has been selected as one of the nation’s 26 finest B&Bs by Veranda.com, the online counterpart to the lifestyle magazine of the same name that focuses on “living well from decorating, architecture and travel to fashion and beauty.” The write-up says, “Portland’s White House offers the perfect Pacific Northwest getaway for those seeking romance, or just a reprieve from city life, as it sits just minutes away from the city’s hustle and bustle. This stunning Greek Revival mansion in Portland’s historic Irving District was built in 1911 and has been lovingly restored to its former glory for the modern age by the current owner, Frank Groff.”

“We are thrilled to have been included on this list of the nation’s finest B&Bs, especially since it comes from such a prestigious, reputable and beloved magazine as Veranda,” says Groff, who with his partner, David Krause, purchased Portland’s White House in 2018.

Lauren Wicks, the Veranda writer who curated the list, says, “These one-of-a-kind inns are truly best in class, giving you plenty of reasons to hit the road and explore your dream destination in cozy, cool digs.

Portland’s White House, which holds a place of honor on the National Historic Registry, was built for Oregon timber baron Robert Lytle. He spared no expense on its construction, making it virtually fireproof with metal lath and plaster and tile roofs then carefully installing the very finest materials, including mahogany accents, wood floors and tasteful stained glass windows crafted by the Povey Brothers, “The Tiffany of the Northwest.” Groff and Krause oversaw the remodel of the Main and Carriage Houses, which together encompass 9 ensuite bedrooms. Also restored was the living room, game room, formal dining room, commercial kitchen, grand common areas and an 85-seat ballroom that is ideal for wedding receptions, corporate affairs, birthday celebrations, etc.
