The organic powder is designed to provide an eco-conscious option by using 400% less water compared to standard whey protein products. It is sugar-free, gluten-free, and low-calorie.

Outcast Foods is a US-based supplements company making protein powders, superfood greens, and vitamins from imperfect whole food which would otherwise go to waste. Outcast’s aim is to provide consumers with a sustainable, no waste, high-quality product crafted using their innovative technology.

There is an estimated 1 billion tons of fruit and vegetable wastage from US farms every year, and US households throw away an additional 40 million tons of food. Food is the largest component of US landfill sites and makes up 22% of municipal waste. Food left in landfills releases methane, a greenhouse gas that has a detrimental effect on the environment.

Outcast work with farmers and food producers to repurpose imperfect produce which is deemed not up to retailers’ aesthetic standards and would otherwise be thrown away. They collect the food, refrigerate it immediately to preserve micronutrients before processing at their zero-waste facility. They are able to produce a long-life nutrient-dense product that has the same nutritional value as freshly picked produce, because they quickly preserve, dehydrate and finely mill the fruit and vegetables.

Outcast products are aimed at consumers who want to help reduce food wastage and the environmental cost of dumping food in landfills.

A spokesperson for the company commented: “Our new chocolate protein powder is ideal for those trying to make more conscious, healthy food choices. We all know that reducing food waste and choosing sustainable foods is one way we can do our part in the fight against climate change and make the world a better place.”
