Tyrone, GA. Essence Orthodontics, How Braces or Invisalign Improves Self-Esteem & Confidence for Kids and Teens
Children benefit from visits to the orthodontist by receiving quality care that leads to long-term dental and overall health.
But a recent study reveals kids can get much, much more by receiving orthodontic treatment when it’s needed – improved self-esteem and a decreased chance they will be victims of bullying.
In a study featured in the December edition of the American Journal of Orthodontics researchers found that a large number of children who reported being bullied said they were bullied because of the appearance of their teeth or face.
Bullies picked on children because of their teeth and facial features more than any other reason, the study found, more than a child’s strength or weight.
Dr. Stewart was inspired to become an orthodontist at a young age, in part because he was self-conscious about his teeth and was afraid to smile as a child. With offices in Tyrone, Ga Dr. J. Stewart can help children correct problem teeth and increase their self-esteem.
The study of sixth-graders conducted in Amman, Jordan listed four main features that bullies focused on when confronting other children. They included:
Spaces between teeth.
Missing teeth.
The color or shape of teeth.
Prominent top teeth or “buck teeth.”
The study of 920 students found that nearly half admit to having been bullied- teeth were found to be the top cause behind the bullying.
The study did not include children already receiving orthodontic treatment, nor did it include children who were diagnosed with congenital abnormalities.
The study was conducted to examine bullying among school-age children and its effect on school attendance and classroom performance while also looking at the role of physical and facial appearance in relation to bullying.
The head of the American Association of Orthodontists expressed that orthodontists in the United States have long recognized the relationship between dental problems in kids and self-esteem.
”A person’s smile is very important in communication and interpersonal relations,” -Dr. Gayle Glenn, president of the AAO.
Glenn went on to say “they can be an easy target for teasing or bullying. Parents will often tell say that their child is being teased about the appearance of his/her teeth.”
A dozen orthodontists from an AAO panel found that the Jordanian study can easily apply to children in the United States.
One of the goals of Essence Orthodontics is to help children gain a healthy smile, better self-esteem, and to avoid the physical and psychological perils of bullying. The AAO recommends children receive orthodontic screening by the age of 7.
The benefits of braces are wide-ranging; from health to cosmetic benefits and improvement in self-esteem. Gaining confidence and improving self-esteem is one of the main reasons people seek orthodontic treatment.
People with crooked teeth or over/under bites will often become self-conscious about their smile- leading them to smile with their mouths closed, cover their mouths when laughing, or avoid speaking up in public places in an effort to hide their teeth. Many develop issues with low self-esteem due to their teeth.
Having high self-esteem and self-confidence is especially important for children; it can impact their mental and emotional well-being during their early years of critical development and can shape the person they grow up to be. According to Dr. J. Stewart , “Self-esteem is a child’s passport to a lifetime of mental health and social happiness. It’s the foundation of a child’s well-being and the key to success as an adult. At all ages, how one feels about themselves will affect their actions.”
Correcting crooked teeth or an over/under bite at an early age can have a huge impact on a child’s self-confidence, encouraging them to smile with confidence and feel good about themselves.
After orthodontic treatment, the improvement in self-esteem and self-confidence can be truly life changing for patients. A beautiful “Essence smile” can help ease self-consciousness and allow patients to laugh, smile, and speak with pride! The benefits of braces are truly priceless!
Choosing the experts at Essence Orthodontics to design a child’s smile can help them with their confidence and will be one of the best investments one can make in the health of a child.
