Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Texas, serving the Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park and neighboring areas with a myriad of plumbing services such as drain cleaning, hydrojetting, general plumbing repairs, sewer camera inspections and rooter work, has been addressing the problem of sewer system backups in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, stressing to customers how sewage overflows have become more dangerous than ever before.
“Sewage backups and overflows have, for years, been a major concern, but the Coronavirus pandemic has forced the issue into a stronger spotlight now,” explains Brett Bidwell, franchise owner of Mr. Rooter Plumbing. “A plethora of home or business owners who experience backups often cannot pay for the up-front costs of cleanup and disinfection, forcing them to tackle the project themselves; however, we have been making members of our community aware of the fact that COVID-19 – or SARS-CoV-2 – has the potential to be carried through sewage, and as such they should seek direct and immediate assistance with sewage backups to protect themselves and the public at large.”
According to Bidwell, Mr. Rooter receives public notices on a regular basis from the local Department of Public Works, informing the company of instances such as raw sewage entering one of the local waterways, and because untreated sewage can escape the underground pipe network due to breaks, leaks or inundation from storm water during rain events, Bidwell’s business offers a number of emergency plumber services to address these calamities, especially during these unprecedented times.

Professionals like Bidwell have begun looking at studies, such as one put forth by environmental biologists at the University of Stirling, which have warned that the potential spread of COVID-19 via sewage “must not be neglected” in the battle to protect human health. And while the response to the global pandemic has focused on preventing person-to-person transmission, experts now believe the virus could also be spread in waste water.
The College of Public Health, as part of its ongoing COVID-19 analysis efforts, reprinted an article recently prepared for the Water Quality and Health Council by Heather Murphy, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics assistant professor, and infection preventionist consultant Barbara Soule, that focuses on the potential spread of the virus via bathroom sewer pipes which may be improperly connected – and if it is revealed that Coronavirus can move through sewage pipes and infect others, says Bidwell, the importance of maintaining commercial and residential drain plumbing that has been properly installed becomes critical.
“The distinctive odor of sewer fumes near floor drains and sinks and/or a ‘gurgling’ sound from a floor or sink drain are indications of a faulty drain trap,” adds Bidwell. “After flushing a toilet, water should always be visible in the basin; furthermore, we have found that high-rise buildings are at greater risk because of the common drain system ‘stack’ between floors.
“Additional information on the outbreak will guide personal health practices, which may need to change and adapt.”
