The Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep disorders Medical Center, a sleep therapy center based in Thousand Oaks, has released a new video discussing alternative methods for treating a condition called Restless Limb Syndrome (RLS) without the use of medication.

RLS is a long-term sleep disorder that causes an uncontrollable urge to move one’s legs, arms, or, less frequently, other body parts. The condition is associated with sensations described as crawling, tingling, creeping, itching, pain, and discomfort.
These unpleasant feelings generally occur in the evening or at night, making it hard to fall asleep and significantly affecting the quality of life. In the most severe cases, RLS may cause daytime sleepiness, low energy, anxiety, and depression.
While drugs can successfully relieve RLS symptoms, they may not be an option for many, particularly for patients already taking multiple medications or pregnant women. Fortunately, there are various alternative solutions that can help improve sleep. Such a method has now been suggested by Dr. Ronald A. Popper, a board-certified sleep disorders specialist with more than 35 years of experience.
In the video released on the center’s website, he talks about the benefits of a new device called Relaxis. The FDA approved device features a pillow-sized pad that is positioned below the legs. A patient can activate Relaxis to start vibrating at the desired intensity by using a connected controller.
The vibrations act as counter stimulation to override the feeling of restless legs, providing physical relief without waking the patient. The applied therapy resembles physical movement such as walking or leg shaking, which often is the only method for relieving pain and discomfort caused by RLS.
Studies prove that Relaxis leads to significant improvements in coping with RLS symptoms compared to placebo devices, enabling some patients to quit medical treatment.
Patients seeking more information about sleep problems and ways to tackle them can look at the center’s website to find more videos in the series or download a white paper discussing obstructive sleep apnea for free. It is also possible to receive personalized treatment from Dr. Popper by completing various questionnaires or arrange a web-based video visit through the center’s telemedicine platform.
