This small town of just over 6500 is often overlooked as cars drive by on I-25 on their way to Cheyenne, WY or Denver, CO, but people are beginning to take notice of this little city known as the “Gateway to Northern Colorado”. The population here has grown nearly 150% since 2000 and with an influx of new construction permits in the last two years, it is clear that something big is happening.

John Stegner of the local real estate company New Era Group commented, “It really is amazing how quickly this little town has developed and the interest it is garnering. People and businesses from all over the state and country are taking a close look at Wellington.”

Nestled in northern Colorado and surrounded by trout fishing, National Parks, natural resources and the nearby cities of Ft. Collins and Cheyenne, Wellington's growth marks the rebirth of another great small town. Founded in 1902, it was known mostly as a service stop for drivers traveling back and forth between Colorado's larger cities. It's most notable fame came with the discovery of wooly mammoth remains in the year 2000 during new home construction and who knows what they might uncover next.

Recently, the influx of new business and residential growth has made it one of the hottest areas in the state. “With home prices $110,000 less on average than those in nearby Ft. Collins and the tremendous amount of growth, this certainly isn't just a bedroom community anymore,” added Stegner.

City and business leaders are taking a proactive approach towards economic development. A recent report from DowntownColoradoInc.org highlighted many positive attributes about Wellington including an abundance of community pride and spirit, great access to highways, railways and internet, and a community attitude that is committed to improvement. The desire of the leaders to maintain the core values of a small town while planning for growth well into the future definitely puts this little city on the must watch list.
