-- Falling is the biggest fear Americans have about their aging bodies. A tumble late in life can break a hip, or cause a head injury, and lead to a long recovery and perhaps early death.
Staying fit helps prevent falls, but the vast majority of seniors don’t exercise. In fact, some are worried that if they move their bodies much, they’ll be more like to – you guessed it – suffer a fall.
But nothing could be further from the truth. Exercise is the miracle drug for healthy, safe aging. And now a simple pair of technologically enhanced socks dramatically improve older people’s balance and give them the confidence to get and stay fit.
That’s right. Socks.
“I was initially blown away by the prospect of helping seniors with fall prevention, which the Voxx socks do,” says personal trainer Ted Patterson, himself 75 and a specialist at training seniors and people going through physical rehabilitation.
Ted and others have powerful motivation to prevent falls. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says one in four Americans over 65 falls each year. Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults.
What’s more, Ted noticed that when he wore Voxx socks at his gym, he was also much stronger. He started lifting heavy in the gym again and advising clients to wear them. Now Ted swears by the technology as a way to help seniors stay active – far beyond just lowering their risk of falling.
“You want to maintain what you have worked for over the years,” he says, noting that people begin to lose muscle mass around age 40, along with bone density. Strength training helps with both.
“For an older adult who wants to prevent injury and keep going in activities, the Voxx socks help them do what they need to do,” Patterson says.
The power lies in Voxx’s Human Performance Technology that’s woven into the socks, which look and feel like an ordinary pair of socks. (The HPT is also available in insoles and patches.) The proprietary pattern stimulates nerve endings on your feet in the peripheral nervous system, sending messages to the part on the brain the regulates balance, performance, reaction time, pain, recovery and other functions.
The California Sports Institute found that Voxx products increased athletes’ power by 22 percent, velocity by 17 percent, and range of motion by 15 degrees.
“The effect on balance, performance and pain is real, profound and instant,” says Voxx Vice President Stan Esecson. “I see it every day. Whether the desire is reducing falls or improving performance, people can’t believe it when they put on the socks. Even a small advantage is important, and we give them a huge advantage. We invite people to watch some of the videos and to just try it yourself and for your loved ones. The gift of greater strength, balance and confidence is priceless. Imagine being able to travel again, to walk through airports, onto cruise ships, to enjoy the destination and play with the grand kids.
Esecson continued “I was recently with Dr. Oz I asked him take off his shoes, stand up straight, arm stiff and I tried to tip him over, he tipped (everyone tips), then he stood on our insoles and I tried to tip him again, I couldn’t budge him. I asked him if I was pretending, He said “No you’re not pretending, but why am I not tipping?” The brain, it’s the biggest mystery in the world. There’s so much we just don’t know about how it works.
