The clinical team at Mission Prep recognizes that adolescent boys today are facing a rising tide of challenges, with much recent research showing that boys and girls now rank similarly in rates of depression and anxiety, though boys are much more likely to be diagnosed with a behavioral disorder than girls.
Moreover, they are less likely to receive treatment, with only 33% of boys getting help compared to 45% of girls.
As a representative for Mission Prep explained, there is also a strong correlation between worsening mental health in young boys and the rates at which they are falling behind in school, college, and into early adulthood, as well as their vulnerability to toxic ideologies via the growing manosphere.
As such, Mission Prep believes that specialist teen mental healthcare providers need to be doing more to support teenage boys—especially by developing new therapy modalities—and also doing more outreach work to encourage treatment among vulnerable boys and their families.
Therefore, in addition to widely accepted evidence-based therapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, EMDR, and trauma-informed therapy—which are delivered through structured individual therapy sessions, group therapy sessions and clinical mentoring programs—Mission Prep has pioneered new boy-centered holistic therapies.
Some of these include outdoor adventures like surf therapy, horseback riding, skateboarding, and go-karting, which are supported by physical activities like boxing and personal training sessions. Together, these opportunities for physical expression—which, to speak aphoristically, let boys be boys—are designed to resonate with the unique physiological needs of teenage boys. They are also designed to bridge the body and mind to provide better opportunities for personal development and therapeutic growth.
Mission Prep has seen promising results among teenage boys receiving treatment for anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma and PTSD, psychosis, and social anxiety. They have also observed positive responses in teen boys who have panic attacks and technology dependence problems, and those struggling with academic and social challenges—which can often impact their development and future success.
Dr. William Doge, the National Medical Doctor for Mission Prep, said, “At our gender-specific, inpatient facility in Rancho Palos Verdes, we understand the importance of early intervention and gender-specific support. By focusing on the distinct needs of teen boys, we help them develop healthy coping skills, emotional resilience, and a strong foundation for long-term success.”
