-- Gabe Cohen’s Redemption: From Addiction to Recovery Leadership on Sober.Buzz

Sober.Buzz Episode 12, “Gabe Cohen,” produced by The NXC Podcast Network, presents a compelling narrative of transformation. Gabe Cohen, founder of Discovery Cafe in Rifle, Colorado, recounts a journey from childhood trauma, addiction, and seven prison sentences to leading peer-based recovery initiatives. The episode, available at https://youtu.be/_5z7eye01nw, offers hope for individuals battling addiction.

Childhood Trauma and Early Struggles

Raised in a middle-class Long Island suburb, Cohen faced childhood sexual abuse outside the home, leading to unresolved trauma. By age 13, drug use began, with cocaine becoming the drug of choice by 15. This marked the onset of a downward spiral, including arrests and family estrangement.

Cycle of Addiction and Incarceration

Cohen’s addiction to crack and later methamphetamine fueled a cycle of crime, homelessness, and recidivism. Between 1998 and 2011, seven prison sentences occurred, often followed by release into homelessness without support. Cohen describes the challenge: “You get out with a piece of paper… no money, no phone, no job,” highlighting systemic barriers to reintegration.

Turning Point in 2011

In 2011, at age 40, Cohen reached a pivotal moment. Relocating to Rifle, Colorado, to reconnect with two sons, engagement in Alcoholics Anonymous, counseling, and Krav Maga began. Despite relapses, commitment to recovery strengthened, demonstrating the possibility of change later in life.

Establishment of Discovery Cafe

Recognizing a lack of recovery resources in rural Rifle, Cohen founded Discovery Cafe, a peer-to-peer support model. The program now operates in county jails, the Colorado Department of Corrections, and sober living homes, empowering justice-involved men to rebuild lives. This initiative underscores the value of community-driven recovery.

Krav Maga as a Catalyst

Cohen’s dedication to Krav Maga, a self-defense system, restored confidence. Earning three black belts and teaching globally, a sense of purpose emerged. Cohen reflects, “I’m 40 years old, but I am capable of learning something new,” inspiring others to embrace transformative skills.
