Average high temperatures along the South Carolina coast ease from the low 80s in September to the upper 60s by November. The range suits long rides through the middle of the day, not only the early morning and evening hours summer heat tends to dictate.
Shade defines much of the ride. Much of the trail network runs beneath a heavy tree canopy, with greenery overhead covering the paths almost continuously until they open toward the beach.
The guide itself is built around an interactive map rather than a static route list. Riders can toggle trails on and off with a legend, zoom in for detail, and click a restaurant or point of interest for information and photographs. Clicking a trail returns the distance of that ride along with planning notes, allowing visitors to match a route to the time they have.
The island is laid out for travel by bicycle. Trails are set apart from the roadway and shared by cyclists and pedestrians, and the Kiawah Island Community Association sets a speed limit of 25 mph unless otherwise posted, with golf carts, e-bikes and scooters barred from roads and trails. The arrangement allows guests to reach beaches, restaurants and shops without returning to a car.
Toward that end, Seaside Cycles rents a cargo trailer that doubles as a pullable cart. The unit hauls up to 100 pounds and is intended for larger loads such as beach gear or a trip to the grocery store, attaching to one of the company's bikes or detaching for use on foot. It is rented as a trailer only and does not include a bike.
The rest of the fleet covers most rider sizes: 26-inch regular and large frames, 24-inch and 20-inch models, and 16-inch children's bikes with or without training wheels, along with tandems and adult tricycles. Add-ons include child seats, tag-a-long tandem attachments, child trailers and helmets in three sizes. Beach equipment is offered alongside the bikes, including backpack chairs, 7-foot umbrellas, sun shades, boogie boards and foldable wagons.
Delivery, pickup, baskets and locks are included in every order, and guests do not need to be present for either. Discounts are available on orders of eight or more items and on stays of three weeks or longer.
