This is the fifth book Brooks has authored. Jam Run was written with the aim in mind to add to the Eddie Barrow series and also raise awareness of how discriminatory laws that target specific communities can harm an entire society. There’s also particular excitement about this launch because many fans of Chill Run—its predecessor—wanted to know if there would be a sequel. Brooks is excited to announce that the fans will be rewarded.
Jam Run sets its main focus on Eddie Barrow and his friend Corey Stephenson getting tangled up in a murder case that the authorities don’t appear to want to solve. Readers will likely find a particular interest in how Eddie doubts himself and his observational skills, only to be forced to use them in order to survive. The book’s cover art was created by renowned graphic designer Jeroen ten Berge and Jam Run is being released by the author.
Russell Brooks has a background in biology, insurance and finance. He is also passionate about social justice issues—especially for communities who’ve had their rights violated. These elements helped him with the content of the novel.
When asked about why he wrote the book, Brooks said: “When social and systemic barriers discourage victims and witnesses of hate or sex crimes from coming forward, it empowers the abusers. I’m appalled at the level of social acceptance of the ‘Buggery Law’ and other similar laws in the Caribbean. Vilifying a community with discriminatory laws has repercussions on society.”
Brooks has hopes that the book will take his future novels in a new direction with more inclusive characters. The author’s goals helped him overcome some of the mishaps during the project’s creation. “When COVID-19 hit, I was forced to cancel my travel plans to Montego Bay where I would spend 2-3 weeks researching the content for the novel. I overcame this obstacle by having ZOOM meetings with my collaborator, Norris Douglas of REALTours Jamaica, who not only lives in Montego Bay but knows the areas where JAM RUN take place very well,” said Brooks.
In a recent interview, the author made a point of thanking his longtime editor Lisa Dawn Martinez, Jeroen ten Berge who designed the book cover, Norris and Samantha Douglas who assisted in fact-checking the Jamaican content, and Signe Nichols who’s always produced his books in both eBook and paperback formats. He also wants to thank journalist and author Carolyne Van Der Meer who coached him on media relations, and Preston Martelly who assisted him in redesigning his website and getting it properly ranked.
