Rob Esterley, known as the “Father of Compassionate Design,” has developed an entire category of interior design focused on creating spaces that provide serenity, restoration, and healing.

It’s in the beautiful estate homes of Esterley’s clients that his gifts shine. The stories of transformation are astonishing and – at the same time – very basic, speaking to our most foundational human needs for comfort, calm, and security.

“Walking into the room Rob designed for the Philharmonic House of Design [in Orange County, California] was like being enveloped in the warmest hug imaginable from a dear friend,” says one of Rob’s clients.

Esterley’s motivation has come from his clients’ personal stories of triumphing over and recovering from trauma as well as his own childhood story of distress growing up in an alcoholic household. Much of Esterley’s insight and strength come from his path to wellness and addiction recovery, with his own success of 27 years of sobriety.

Esterley has created serenity rooms and healing spaces for many of his well-to-do clientele in Southern California. He finds that those who are high achievers have a unique need for design that goes beyond luxury, incorporating a nurturing environment that enables restoration.

Esterley’s designs are based in the science of using the senses to provide healing. But the true secret is his intuitive gift for knowing what will help a client in a particular case, whether it’s the use of light therapy, aromatherapy, soothing sounds, or the more standard tools of the interior designer’s trade – color, texture, form, and scale. Esterley’s magic is an alchemy he creates with the combination of all these elements.

Esterley has also provided his services to many people who are overlooked by other designers.

Client Ray Covarrubias, a veteran of the Viet Nam War, had experienced significant suffering and his family home was not assisting in his recuperation. After Esterley’s treatment of the home, Mr. Covarrubias said he slept soundly for the first time in more than thirty years.

Esterley has two favorite demographics, in particular; households catering to multiple generations and veterans.

An ongoing relationship with client Katie Coates and her family has resulted in Esterley providing their Long Beach home with room to gather with family and friends and a serene healing space for Katie to relax in at the end of the day.

Katie, an author and Public Relations consultant, saved her father (who is himself a veteran) from drowning during a family trip to Kauai in 2017. They returned from Hawaii after her father Gib spent a month in three different hospitals and had recovered enough to fly home. At that point, Katie realized that their home was no longer suited to their needs.

Esterley and Katie had met years earlier when they were both volunteers for a charity located in Orange County, California. Esterley sprang in to assist by helping to declutter and then decorate the home. Together, they created sacred spaces within the 1948 cottage for enjoying time as a family and relaxing at the end of the day.

“Rob’s help in our family’s recovery from that ordeal was invaluable,” says Katie. “When I moved in to help my dad, I was dealing with a lot of deferred maintenance. And because of disorder and just too much stuff, we couldn’t use the den as a family. Now, we have started entertaining again and enjoyed Christmas with my daughter and her friends from college in that room. We even hosted a milestone birthday party for my dad.”
