Retail Sales are Up but Some Local Business Owners Aren’t Prospering

Recent reports highlight a great holiday shopping season. But one expert says not all local business owners had a great year. He talks about a free marketing tip that could make a difference.

The reports about local sales have been fantastic this year. A new report shows that the nation’s retailers saw a 5.1 percent increase in sales from November 1 to Christmas Eve over last year. And according to one expert, that’s just the first wave of reporting.

“We have yet to see the full reports of holiday shopping and retail sales from this year,” says a spokesman from FindUsLocal.com, an online local business directory that offers small business owners a free local business listing. “I believe that once the final figures are in, this will turn out to be one of the strongest Christmas seasons ever.”

But, he says, not all local business owners had a great shopping season. “Some small business owners still don’t have an online presence, and that means today’s tech-savvy consumers can’t find them,” he says. “And that’s a shame because it only takes a few minutes to create one.”

He’s talking about signing up for a free local business listing. These listings are how today’s consumers find local businesses, and the best part of that they are free.

“Just go to FindUsLocal.com, look for your business, and then claim it as the owner,” he says. “You will then be asked to fill in the details about your business and add any pertinent data such as your business hours and the methods of payment you accept. After that, new customers will be able to find your store, service business, or restaurant.”

Indeed, studies show that almost 100 percent of shoppers use local business directories to find local businesses. “With statistics like that, why wouldn’t you create a free business listing? It’s a great way to find new business.”
