Remote Contrast Supervision For Radiology Groups: Virtual Service Expanded

Share this news:

Physician coverage no longer has to be the bottleneck preventing outpatient imaging centers from extending hours or increasing contrast-enhanced CT and MRI capacity, as ContrastConnect expands its remote contrast supervision services.

-- ContrastConnect has expanded its remote contrast supervision coverage, helping radiology groups maintain qualified physician oversight for contrast-enhanced imaging across multiple locations and operating hours. The service enables facilities to extend coverage through real-time virtual supervision while supporting safe, compliant workflows for CT and MRI procedures.

The expansion follows a significant regulatory development for imaging providers, with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services making virtual direct supervision of applicable diagnostic services permanent beginning January 1, 2026. The change comes as distributed radiology workflows become increasingly common, with data from the American College of Radiology and Radiology Business Management Association showing that 82% of surveyed radiology practices permit some form of remote work or telework.

Under the requirements, supervising physicians must remain immediately available through real-time, two-way audiovisual communication. ContrastConnect notes that this gives eligible imaging facilities another way to maintain required physician coverage when on-site availability might otherwise limit when or where contrast-enhanced procedures can be performed.

"When physician availability determines whether a scanner can operate, existing capacity can go unused even when the equipment, technologists, and patient demand are already there," a ContrastConnect representative said.

Against this backdrop, ContrastConnect says its service allows imaging organizations to extend operating hours, increase contrast-enhanced services across existing locations, and support satellite facilities where technologists work on-site with physicians providing supervision remotely. Coverage can be structured around sporadic, recurring, or long-term supervision needs, giving facilities flexibility as patient volumes and operating schedules change.

The company supports these workflows through a purpose-built virtual supervision platform with HIPAA-compliant, real-time audiovisual communication. Facilities also receive technologist training, onboarding support, a dedicated physician hotline, and quarterly readiness assessments intended to maintain consistent procedures as coverage expands across locations.

While CMS now recognizes virtual direct supervision on a permanent basis, requirements can vary by state and jurisdiction. ContrastConnect advises imaging organizations to confirm applicable regulations when developing remote supervision workflows.
