Bisexual artist and indie designer Molly Alice Hoy brings a whole new meaning to “don we now our gay apparel” as she launches her LGBT clothing line Dearly & Queerly just in time for holiday gift shopping.
Well known on social media for her viral comics about the awkwardness of coming out of the closet, Hoy opened her first store Gold + Mean Design Co. in 2017 with her bestselling token queer pin. Since then, she has specialized in designing queer-friendly products, including a line of pride flag face masks in response to the pandemic. She has also raised hundreds of dollars for the Immigrant Legal Resource Center by designing and selling “Abolish ICE” shirts.
As for what inspired this new queer clothing brand, Hoy says, “I was bothered by how queerness and especially bisexuality are often stereotyped in the media, and I wanted to confront those stereotypes head-on, in a playful way.” Her new line of humorous LGBT shirts and tanks features cheeky phrases such as “No Gender, No Problem” and “Not Your Unicorn” in bold pride flag colors. She also has a collection of pronoun shirts so that wearers can avoid being misgendered while out and about.
Some designs are especially topical, like the rainbow flag shirt that simply reads “QUEERANTINE.” But Hoy doesn’t limit herself to rainbows, incorporating colors from the lesbian, nonbinary, and bisexual pride flags as well. “Inclusiveness is important to me,” she notes. “I know what it’s like to not be represented, so I wanted my line to have something for everyone. I want people who don’t normally feel seen to feel seen. And hopefully get a laugh out of it too.”
