Proper Fishing License Ensures Uninterrupted Fishing Adventures

Share this news:

Fishers need a license to cast in BC, no matter if it’s in freshwater or saltwater. Avoid costly fines by ensuring you have the correct license for your fishing incursion.

-- Fishing is both a relaxing and exciting activity, depending on how well the fish are biting at the time in question.

BC requires all fishers to have an appropriate license, regardless of where the activity is taking place. Licenses for the new fishing season are available starting in March, according to the BC government.

A freshwater license is the most common and is required for any lake or stream in the province. People caught by conservation officers without a proper license for the time the fishing takes place will find themselves not only without their catch, but likely without their gear and possibly their vehicle as well. They’ll also be smacked with a fine that can be anywhere between $115 and $100,000. So it’s better to get that license squared away before that first cast.

A license can be for a single calendar day, or the full year. Cost of the license depends on the duration, and funds brought in from those sales goes to the Freshwater Fishing Society of BC. They use the funds for conservation, research, and education.

Tidewater licenses are for those that like to take their fishing to the ocean and are regulated by the federal government, since Canada’s coastlines are considered federal jurisdiction. They’re different than the freshwater licenses, as they work more like a hunting license. One can only catch specific fish or shellfish as per the license, and only in certain amounts.

Sport fishing in BC is a lucrative industry, since it’s the only western province bordering the ocean and there’s an array of fish and shellfish in coastal waters.

There are plenty of places for sport fishing enthusiasts to try their luck. Sport fishing lodges have the amenities and facilities to make tidal water fishing go all that much smoother. King Pacific Lodge, located in Milbanke Sound near Bella Bella, is set up with everything one would need to land the catch of the day. The waters around Milbanke Sound are part of the migration route for Chinook and Silver salmon, which will increase the odds of landing a big one. Just ensure all the proper licenses are in place, and happy casting.
