-- With the economic and social upheaval of 2020, Dannemora Federal Credit Union (DFCU), a not-for-profit, member-owned credit union based on Plattsburgh, New York, is working to educate consumers on the benefits of credit union membership.
In the post-pandemic environment, it is more important than ever for community-based financial institutions to remind people that they can open their eyes, so to speak, to an alternative to for-profit banking.
Representatives for the local credit union say: “It seems like the economy is ready to rebound and so are working individuals and families. Now, more than ever, we want anyone who might need straightforward access to savings accounts and loans to consider how easy it is to join us. Our goal is to build awareness and help consumers gain knowledge that might even challenge their perception of what is possible when you bank local with us as your credit union. We want to remind people in our region that joining our growing institution will help them better leverage a variety of available money-saving financial tools, products and services. We are a modern financial institution, built to help people in times like these.”
In this effort, DFCU is drawing upon industry research recently conducted by the Credit Union National Association, which identified a series of strengths held by credit unions of which consumers might not readily be aware, such as:
Control – DFCU is accountable to its member-owners and not to shareholders like is traditionally found at a for-profit bank.
Budget Focused – DFCU works daily to help families who are looking to master their budget. They do this by making available an array of savings products and guiding members on loan refinance options that can save them thousands over a lifetime.
Scale – While local, DFCU still provides access to 24/7 banking and mobile services, along with a nationwide network of ATMs. The many services and technologies provided by the credit union are on par with what one might expect to find at a large bank.
The credit union says: “Take a moment to imagine yourself living in full control of your budget. Perhaps your mind can envision a remarkable family vacation that you saved for. Maybe you simply have a dream to consolidate debt so that you can make other financial dreams possible. That financially empowered feeling is what we help enable! We help people live happier and we help them break free when it comes to their money. If your funds aren’t working for you at a big bank, we’ve got you! With us, you’re a person, not a number. We’ll help you turn financial dreams into fantastic realities!”

Additional information about DFCU:
Dannemora Federal Credit Union was organized in 1958 by a group of people who wanted to own and control their own financial institution. They built a credit union that allowed them to borrow and save money securely, confidentially and at fair rates of return. Since that time, this not-for-profit financial co-op has sought to be their members’ primary source of banking; providing quality financial services that exceed expectations and support the local economy in the Plattsburgh, NY, region.
Opening an account is simple. Anyone who lives, works, worships or goes to school in Clinton, Essex, Franklin or St. Lawrence County (and immediate family members of current members), are encouraged to visit a local branch during business hours, or to visit dfcu.net 24 hours a day. Only a minimum of $5 is required to be kept in a savings account to remain a member for life and keep access to the credit union for a lifetime!
