Pets Can Go, a comprehensive online information resource for dog and cat owners, has released a new report on pet-friendly plants, focusing on the benefits of drought-tolerant flowers like cosmos for pet-safe home gardens.

Titled “Pet Safe Gardens: Cosmos Not Poisonous to Dogs and Cats,” Pets Can Go's report explains that with dogs and cats often willing to nibble on just about anything, accidental poisonings can occur quickly in home environments where toxic plants are part of a garden layout. The article offers insights into varieties of the non-toxic cosmos flower, explaining how these and other non-toxic florals can be incorporated into a colorful garden palette to create a pet-safe environment, and offering advice on what to do if a cat or dog accidentally ingests a poisonous plant.

A study on plant poisonings in domestic animals carried out by the Poison Control Centre of Milan and the Veterinary Toxicology Section of the University of Milan reveals dogs are the most commonly poisoned pet species followed by cats. Of 2,150 calls to the toxicology department related to toxic plants, 73 percent resulted in mild to moderate clinical signs while 10.6 percent of cases were fatal.

Pets Can Go has created a compendium of non-toxic drought tolerant plants to help pet owners recognize which plants they should avoid, and which are safe to incorporate into their gardens.

“Our pets are curious by nature, often sniffing and nibbling on plants which can lead to poisonings,” says Kamala, author of the Pets Can Go report. “Creating a pet-safe garden not only involves choosing the right plants but also involves strategic plant placement and creative barriers.”

Though not native to California, cosmos flowers offer a particularly colorful bloom that both novice and seasoned gardeners should have no trouble maintaining throughout the state, Pets Can Go says placing these flowers and other non-toxic plants around the perimeter of a garden can create a natural protective barrier for keeping pets out of harm’s way.

The report also acknowledges that despite a pet owner’s best efforts, some cats and dogs will get into places they shouldn’t and therefore offers advice on how to create a container garden and incorporate decorative barriers like small pet safe fences into the garden as an extra safety measure.

Pets Can Go reminds pet owners that plants that are safe for dogs aren’t always safe for cats, and vice versa; fortunately, cosmos are safe for both. However, any non-toxic plant that’s consumed in large amounts can lead to stomach upset.
