The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., or while supplies last. Attendance is free and open to all school-aged children accompanied by an adult. No registration is required.
The Topeka event marks the final stop on Patterson Legal Group’s 2026 backpack giveaway tour, which launched in Wichita on July 25 and continued through Garden City and St. Joseph. Together, the four events aim to put approximately 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies into the hands of students who need them most before the 2026–2027 school year begins.
According to the National Retail Federation's 2025 back-to-school survey, K–12 families spent an average of $858 per household on school essentials last year — with supplies alone accounting for roughly $144 of that total. With an estimated 62,000 Kansas children living in poverty, according to Kansas Action for Children, that cost arrives at one of the tightest points in the family budget calendar.
