For the last seven years, Dr. Peter Merai has been featured on Washington DC area radio station, WOL DC News, in order to discuss oral health, and it’s importance to maintaining good overall health. On it, he discusses a wide range of oral health topics that include subjects like periodontal disease, oral cancer, proper dental hygiene, and more, for a large audience of listeners.
Residents from the Greater Washington, DC area can tune in from 12:30 to 1pm every Monday for valuable advice on proper oral care at home, breakthroughs in oral health technology and practice, as well as information on a large variety of health topics. These topics range from the effects of some medications, links between gum disease and patients with diabetes, dental implants, sedation in dentistry, the relationship oral health has to overall human well-being, healthy dieting tips, and a lot more.
Studies from the Center for Disease Control have shown that almost half of all American adults, aged 30 and over have some form of periodontitis – the more advanced form of periodontal (or gum) disease, affecting an estimated 64 million men and woman. Many research studies have suggested that gum disease is connected to many other diseases, ranging from heart disease and diabetes to arthritis. With these types of statistics and facts coming from the CDC, Dr. Merai has as his goal, the education of Washington residents about how to prevent these serious health issues, offering not only healthy lifestyle tips, and nutritional information to promote oral and overall health, but also information about gum disease, and other issues pertaining to the teeth and gums. In a statement, Dr. Merai spoke on the importance of awareness, stating: “This is information that unfortunately much of the general public is either unaware of, or has turned a blind eye to. I hope that by raising awareness of the seriousness of proper oral health care for optimum overall health, Washington residents will take a more serious approach to adopting a healthy lifestyle.”
Dr. Peter Merai has proven himself an authority on the subject of oral health, having been a clinical instructor at both the Columbia University and Howard University. He received a BS in Biology from Boston College and got his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Howard University College of Dentistry in Washington DC. Dr. Merai continues learning more and more every year with continuing education courses, and has kept up-to-date with all of the new technology and methodology of modern dentistry.
