-- Binghamton, NY – October 31, 2019 – The team at Ophthalmic Associates of the Southern Tier became the first in upstate New York to use the AcrySof®IQ PanOptix® Trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract surgery patients, just a few days after its commercial release by eye care innovation company Alcon. This cutting-edge lens was the first trifocal IOL approved by the FDA.
Head Surgeon at Ophthalmic Associates, Daniel Sambursky, M.D., F.A.C.S., shared his support for the FDA’s decision when the approval became official earlier this year: “The AcrySof®IQ PanOptix®Trifocal IOL is a remarkable new lens that has the potential to provide patients with a full range of vision after cataract surgery, without the need to wear glasses.”
Intraocular lenses are the artificial lenses that are used to replace the natural crystalline lens during cataract surgery. Even among the advanced vision enhancement that some of these lenses offer, the AcrySof®IQ PanOptix® Trifocal IOL is an innovative step forward.
This state-of-the-art IOL is part of an industry-wide movement towards providing more options to cataract surgery patients who suffer from presbyopia, a condition where close-up vision becomes worse with age. The PanOptix® trifocal lens uses proprietary technology to provide clear vision at all three ranges of vision: distance, intermediate and near. Also correcting astigmatism, this lens provides a variety of enhanced benefits for cataract surgery patients.
“We’re incredibly proud to be the first in The Southern Tier to provide this breakthrough IOL to cataract surgery patients,” Dr. Sambursky said. “We consider our early adoption of this innovative lens an example of our ongoing commitment to provide the best possible outcomes for all patients who entrust us with their vision.”
