Providence, RI, October 24th 2016 – Katherine Winterstein, Professor of Violin at Brown University and pianist Sarah Bob gave a concert yesterday entitled On the Frontier at Brown University’s Grant Recital Hall. Celebrating American composers, Winterstein and Bob presented music by Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Charles Ives, Ruth Crawford, Kenji Bunch, and Stephanie Ann Boyd.

The piece by Stephanie Ann Boyd, a violin and piano sonata entitled Amerigo, was commissioned by and written for Katherine and 49 other violinists as part of the 50 State Sonata Project honoring violin pedagogue John Kendall. Last night’s concert was the Rhode Island premiere of Amerigo, and Winterstein and Bob will be performing Amerigo again on November 13th at the New Gallery Concert Series in Cambridge Massachusetts. “Katherine is an incredible talent”, Boyd said. “It was an absolute joy to be able to work with her to write Amerigo.”

Praised by critics for playing that is “as exciting as it is beautiful,” and for “livewire intensity” that is both “memorably demonic” and “delightfully effective,” violinist Katherine Winterstein enjoys a wide range of musical endeavors, as a chamber musician, orchestral musician, soloist, and teacher. Ms. Winterstein is the concertmaster of the Vermont Symphony, the acting assistant concertmaster of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, she performs regularly with the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and she is currently serving as concertmaster of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.

Pianist Sarah Bob, hailed as “sumptuous and eloquent” by the Boston Globe, is an active soloist and chamber musician noted for her charismatic performances, colorful playing and diverse programming. Considered a “trailblazer when it comes to championing the works of modern composers and combining art media in the process…” (Northeast Performer), she is founding director of the New Gallery Concert Series, a series that combines new music and new visual art along with their creators.
