-- Newman University's Bachelor of Science in Nursing program prepares students to address Kansas healthcare needs through comprehensive education and hands-on training. The program, accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and approved by the Kansas State Board of Nursing, builds the clinical judgment skills essential for effective patient care in today's healthcare environment.

Students experience multiple nursing specialties throughout their education, developing adaptable skills for various healthcare settings. A distinctive feature includes collaboration with Newman's athletic department to assist student athletes pursuing nursing degrees, creating a supportive environment for those balancing academic and athletic commitments.
The School of Healthcare Professions recently celebrated 19 nursing graduates during its pinning ceremony, where each student received a ceremonial pin marking their transition from student to graduate. The Newman nursing pin, designed by the first graduating class in 1984, depicts a cross symbolizing Christian heritage and a lamp representing both knowledge and Florence Nightingale's contributions to modern nursing.
Patricia Limo, who received the Distinguished BSN Graduate Award, represents the program's success. Originally from Uganda, Limo balanced volunteer work at local nonprofits while making history as the first woman from Newman to compete in the 2023 cross-country national championship.
"When I first came here, I was afraid and I didn't know if I'd be able to go to nursing school," Limo said. "To receive the BSN award means everything to me. That means I'm capable of doing everything so long as I put my mind to it and involve God in it."
Another graduate, Emily Hendricks, appreciated the program's personal approach: "I enjoyed Newman offering smaller classes and the teachers were able to spend a lot more one-on-one time with us, which I enjoyed."
Graduates have built careers in wound care, clinics, hospice, home health administration, case management, and travel nursing. Many continue their education through advanced programs such as Doctorate of Nursing Anesthesia Practice, Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Nurse Mid-Wife.
The program helps address nursing shortages affecting healthcare delivery across Kansas, where enrollment in nursing education programs has declined by 38% over the past decade according to state reports. Through its educational approach, Newman University contributes qualified nursing professionals prepared to serve communities throughout the state.
