New Study Shows Difficulty of Local Marketing for Business Owners

A new study shows just how difficult it is for local business owners to market their business in light of the online marketing trend.

A new study out by Capital One shows just how difficult it is for some local business owners to bring in new business. The study reveals that 76 percent of small business owners experience challenges when attempting to market their business. According to the study, that’s because local marketing has increased in its complexity because of the growth of online marketing.

“We see it all the time,” says a spokesman from, an online small business directory that helps local business owners conduct local marketing efficiently and without having to spend a lot of money. “But what most of them don’t understand is that it’s possible to reach local online shoppers for free—and with very little time investment.”

He’s talking about creating free small business listings, which are quickly becoming the go-to method for consumers when they want to find US local businesses. In fact, another recent survey shows that 97 percent of local shoppers look online for local businesses and 1 out of 2 of them use local business directories to do it.

The Capital One survey shows that most local business owners struggle with reaching new customers, finding the funds to conduct local marketing, and finding advice on the best local marketing approaches.

“A quality small business directory checks all of these boxes,” he says. “Having a small business listing will give a local business owners an online presence so new customers can find them, and it is free and only takes 10 minutes to set up so it won’t tap out the marketing budget. And as far as getting free advice, we’ve also created a free local marketing video to help local shop owners with that, too.”

Most experts agree that in order for a local business to be successful, it has to have an online presence. That’s because today’s consumers don’t use offline marketing methods to find local shops and restaurants anymore.
