New study reveals heart health protective benefits of one-a-day multi-vitamins

The study found that taking a one-a-day multivitamin supplement lowered homocysteine levels — one of the three biggest threats to the heart — by as much as 17%….and reduced ‘bad’ cholesterol by 14%.

The recent double-blind placebo-controlled study from the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas, Texas, in conjunction with Tufts University and the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center involved 182 participants who were randomly divided to receive either a 24-ingredient multi-nutrient supplement each day or a placebo.

All of the participants had their levels of homocysteine, lipids, and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol oxidation — all risk factors for cardiovascular disease — measured. In addition, concentrations of several vitamins in the participants’ bodies were also assessed, both at the study’s onset and at its conclusion six months later.

This case study provides a real-world look at the challenges facing anyone wanting to supplement with a quality multivitamin.

While vitamin levels predictably rose in the group taking the multi-nutrient supplement, in turn their homocysteine and LDL oxidation levels were found to significantly decrease compared to the placebo group — with decreases of 17 and 14 per cent, respectively.

Elevated levels of homocysteine and LDL cholesterol oxidation are both risk factors for coronary heart disease. Homocysteine has been linked to the early development of cardiovascular disease when present in high amounts. It is also associated with deficiencies of folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12.

LDL cholesterol, when oxidised, is more likely to adhere to arterial walls leading to increased plaque formation. So it follows that antioxidant vitamins could be expected to help prevent this — thereby lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attacks.
