Nuance Energy Group Inc has published a new article examining why a growing number of solar companies are making the shift from concrete to earth anchors, such as its OSPREY PowerRack system, when installing ground-mounted solar panels.

The company’s report examined factors such as the savings on costs, resources, time, and the environmental benefits that could influence solar installers considering which method to adopt for large-scale commercial solar panel installations.
Traditional foundation methods for securing ground-mounted solar racking, such as creating a concrete pier or slab pouring, require extensive preparation work to prepare the site. However, Nuance Energy’s earth anchor system eliminates the need for the costly geotechnical surveys, drilling, and concrete pouring that add time to large-scale installation projects.
Nuance Energy’s earth anchor is specifically designed to handle all terrains, from rugged mountains to desert and plains. The report found that the innovative concrete-free foundation design is gaining favor amongst installers working in regions where soil conditions make pile-driving or concrete-based solutions especially difficult.
As outlined in the report, the company’s patented earth anchor design uses a heavy, hand-sized metal anchor which is driven deep into the ground. This can be achieved by a skeleton crew and without having to hire-in heavy machinery from a third party. The anchor secures the solar array’s racking system via a 72-inch tether cable, which is subject to a unique pull-testing safety process.
Once installed, the earth anchor foundation ensures that the solar panel system is secure, regardless of terrain, and provides robust protection from environmental conditions, including high winds or seismic events.
"The methodology of securing and pull-testing the anchor is patented, and no one else in the U.S. can do what we do," explained a spokesperson for Nuance Energy. "This gives us a huge competitive edge, especially for installers looking for a faster, more reliable installation method."
Nuance Energy’s report further noted the environmental benefits of removing concrete from the foundation stage of installation. Since the material is a major producer of CO2, solar installers could significantly reduce their company’s carbon footprint by switching to the earth anchor method.
