-- HOUSTON, TEXAS (July 2025): Montgomery County in south Texas declared that July is officially Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month. County Judge Mark Keough presented Fibroid InstituteTexas and community doctors with an official proclamation on June 30, 2025. The proclamation supports an expanding 9-state initiative aimed at raising awareness about uterine fibroids. In doing so, the initiative unites communities through self-care and awareness events and forums, while also encouraging further research and funding for this prevalent yet frequently overlooked women's health issue.

To undertake this endeavor and continue with its commitment to setting a new standard of care that’s clear, coordinated, and centered on each patient’s unique needs, Fibroid Institute collaborated with Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough along with community doctors Dr. LaToia Marks of Baylor St. Luke's Medical Group, Dr. Esohe Faith Ohuoba of Memorial Hermann Medical Group, and Dr. Meredith Stocks of Kelsey-Seybold.

“July is Fibroid Awareness Month, and it couldn’t be more timely. Fibroids aren’t just a medical condition—they represent an overlooked public health crisis with a massive economic footprint. This silent burden costs billions annually and takes an incalculable toll on women’s lives. It’s time we bring fibroids to the forefront of conversations about women’s health, equity, and innovation,” explained Dr. Esohe Faith Ohuoba of Memorial Hermann Medical Group.

Dr. Meredith Stocks of Kelsey-Seybold added, “Uterine fibroids, when symptomatic, can be extremely debilitating and can affect women at all stages of life. Because of this, it is important that women are educated about the symptoms of fibroids and all the management options available.”

About Uterine Fibroid Awareness Month

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that impact three out of four women, typically those aged 30 to 50. These growths are often detected during routine well-woman exams. Fibroids can cause significant symptoms, including severe pelvic pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. Other symptoms can include period blood clots, abdominal bloating, frequent urination, constipation, back pain, anemia, and reproductive issues such as miscarriage, preterm labor, and infertility.

Research suggests 226 million women globally are affected by fibroids. However, a lack of conversation and widespread misinformation have left many unprepared for dealing with fibroids. Some are unaware they have fibroids, lack access to proper information or treatment, hesitate to seek help, or dismiss their symptoms as a normal part of being a woman.

Dr. John Fischer of Fibroid Institute Texas emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between healthcare providers and local officials to improve education and care for women with uterine fibroids. He and the fibroid specialists and support team at Fibroid Institute go above and beyond to be thought leaders, empowering women to make informed decisions about their health through free, no obligation resources. These include a phone screening, fibroid treatment comparison guide, an online library of articles, Uterine Fibroid Embolization eligibility quiz or checklist download, and more.

Dr. Fischer also noted that this proclamation helps boost public awareness and supports the objectives outlined in Texas House Bill 1966, signed by Governor Greg Abbott in 2021.

About Fibroid Institute’s Role

As a third-generation Houstonian and a fibroid specialist, Dr. Fischer joined the Fibroid Institute in September 2022. A board-certified Interventional Radiologist with 25+ years of experience, Dr. Fischer emphasizes patient education and awareness and is known for his honesty and compassion as a healthcare provider.

Montgomery County covers 1,047 square miles and is located 40 miles north of downtown Houston in the East Texas Timberlands Region. As of 2024, the county’s population had grown to an estimated 749,613. Montgomery County is part of the nine-county Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan statistical area, which ranks as the fifth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the United States. Introducing Fibroid Awareness Month and having a formal proclamation by Montgomery County is crucial for providing education about symptoms and treatment options to women in Texas.

About Uterine Fibroids and UFE

Although usually benign, fibroids may lead to many of the life-altering symptoms mentioned above. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a non-surgical treatment that uses image-guided interventional radiology techniques through the wrist to navigate a small catheter into the arteries that supply the uterus. At that point, microscopic particles are introduced that block blood flow to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and die while preserving the uterus. It is a safe, fast, and minimally invasive procedure, often providing an alternative to hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or myomectomy (surgical removal of the fibroids). Patients typically go home after one hour. Covered by most insurance plans, UFE requires a much shorter recovery time than traditional surgery. The success rate is over 90%.

Since the institute’s launch in 2016, a growing number of medical professionals—including gynecologists, internists, hematologists, general practitioners, wellness physicians, chiropractors, and physical therapists—have chosen to send patients to the Fibroid Institute. The practice is known for delivering world-class, concierge-level care predicated on personalized care, greater patient access to their fibroid specialist (including 24/7 mobile phone availability during treatment and same-day appointments), virtual and in-person appointments, longer appointment times, heightened coordination of care, and a novel, innovative approach in advanced fibroid treatment. Hence, patients experience little to no discomfort as fibroids shrink.
