Marketing Expert Says Local Business Owners Should Think About Online Reviews

A marketing expert says that local business owners should think twice about using online reviews to get new shoppers in the door.

Many local business owners are scratching their heads trying to figure out how to bring in more new customers as online stores continue to gain traction with consumers. And one local marketing expert says he has an answer.

“So many local shops and restaurants are frustrated because they think most consumers want to shop online these days,” says a spokesman from, an online local business directory that helps local businesses get their name in front of new customers. “But the truth is that while most people do use the internet to find local businesses these days, they go online to find them. And once they do, their online reviews determine whether or not they visit the shop or restaurant.”

He says that if a local shop or restaurant doesn’t have enough online reviews, it will prevent new customers from visiting them. “Online reviews today are what personal recommendations used to be from friends and family,” he says. “In fact, some studies show that today’s consumers trust those online reviews more than personal recommendations.”

He says that the first step in getting online reviews is to set up a free local business listing. After that, he says local shop owners should ask their customers to leave the reviews. “Soon,” he says, “all those new online reviews will cause shoppers to visit your store. And that will only result in new business and more sales for you.”
