On Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., The Market at the Fareway will host a fun, hands-on workshop where guests can build a birdhouse to attract local bluebirds.
For a $15 donation, guests can build a beautiful birdhouse of local white oak or walnut that will make a fine addition to their yards and property. The creative team at Outside the Box, a boutique garden design firm based in New Hope, PA will guide the activity, providing locally-sourced wood, hardware and hands-on instruction.
“Bluebirds prefer to nest in holes found in trees or fence posts found in local farms and fields,” explains Outside the Box founder Steven Severson. “Now that many open spaces in our area have been replaced by homes, we can replace the bluebird’s former habitat by providing them with safe places to nest.”
Outside The Box began more than a decade ago as a small gardening business, says Severson. “We began as a small group who shared a love of horticulture, and since then we’ve expanded to offer nearly every service relating to flower and vegetable gardens … planning, construction, maintenance, watering solutions, even stonemasonry and fence-building.”
The company also donates time and skills to local nonprofits such as Delaware Water Keepers, Bowman Wildlife Preserve and Friends of the Rails in Philadelphia.
“The finished birdhouses can be nailed to any post and will provide an ideal environment for bluebirds to nest and thrive”, Severson says.
Tucked behind the Chestnut Hill Hotel in Philadelphia and accessible via the Fareway from Germantown Avenue or the Southampton Street parking lot, the Market at the Fareway offers a bounty of goods from 16 different vendors. The Market functions as a modern farmer’s market where visitors will find local, fresh products and grocery items including coffee, bread, baked goods, chocolate, fresh produce, fresh seafood, meat, poultry, deli items, sushi, Korean cuisine, Mediterranean cuisine, Caribbean food, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, a brewery, and more.
The Market will host another fun happening on Saturday, June 24, when there will be a special play-with-the-butterflies event for kids and families. For more information, visit the Market’s Facebook page or call 570-726-7030.
