-- SANTA MONICA, Calif. - The Lotus Endometriosis Institute has expanded its integrative medicine and lifestyle care program to place greater emphasis on nutrition, physical activity, environmental factors, targeted botanicals, and other individualized strategies alongside conventional medical care. The approach reflects growing recognition that managing a complex, chronic disease may require attention to more than symptoms alone.
Recent research has continued to investigate the role of non-pharmacological and integrative approaches in endometriosis management. A scoping review by researchers at Amsterdam University Medical Center examined 107 studies evaluating acupuncture, nutritional supplements, dietary interventions, physical therapy, relaxation techniques, psychotherapy, and other complementary approaches. The review identified potential benefits for pain and quality of life while emphasizing substantial differences in study design and evidence quality.
Additionally, a 2025 secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial found that a supervised multimodal exercise program improved fatigue, physical fitness, anxiety, depression, and gastrointestinal symptoms among women with endometriosis who had not responded adequately to conventional treatment.
The Lotus Endometriosis Institute's integrative medicine and lifestyle care program applies this developing evidence within an individualized treatment framework. Rather than presenting lifestyle interventions as a replacement for established medical treatment, the Institute considers strategies that may complement conventional care while addressing factors that can influence symptoms, inflammation, metabolic health, physical function, and overall wellbeing.
"The approach also reflects the Institute's broader view that endometriosis is not a single disease with an identical biological profile in every patient," says Institute Director, Dr. Steven Vasilev. "Differences in genetics, immune responses, hormone signaling, and disease characteristics may influence how an individual responds to treatment. Lifestyle factors can therefore be considered as part of a broader strategy tailored to the person's circumstances rather than presented as a universal prescription."
The Institute's approach is not based on the premise that lifestyle changes can cure endometriosis. Instead, it recognizes an emerging body of research suggesting that nutrition, movement, mind-body practices, targeted supplements or botanicals, and other lifestyle interventions may have a useful role as components of comprehensive, individualized care for women living with endometriosis.
