Professor Paul Y.F. Lee (0330 001 0048) has opened a new S.P.A.I.R.E (Spare Piriformis And Internus, Repair Externus) clinic in London for hip replacement candidates.

-- The professor, a double board-certified surgeon with five international fellowships, has opened the new clinic in Harley Street for patients looking for a modern hip replacement option that offers a more comfortable rehabilitation process than other forms of hip surgery – allowing the patient to begin walking again almost immediately after surgery.

Patients can now benefit from the advantages this new type of surgery offers over other forms of hip replacement surgery. The S.P.A.I.R.E procedure involves fewer complications, greater joint stability, and fewer precautions that need to be taken by the patient post-surgery. After publishing the advantages of this technique in medical journals, Prof. Lee made S.P.A.I.R.E his routine practice for total hip replacement.

Total hip replacement has arguably been one of the most important operations developed in the past century. The earliest recorded attempts at hip replacement were carried out in Germany at the close of the 19th century, but the father of modern hip replacement surgery was a British orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Sir John Charnley, who pioneered ‘total hip arthroplasty’ – a procedure that has evolved since 1970 but remained one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the world: in the U.S., for example, 330,000 hip replacement surgeries are performed each year.

A modification of what is known as ‘the posterior approach’ in total hip replacement, S.P.A.I.R.E has the key benefit of preserving certain muscles and tendons that are integral to full mobility. By not cutting the abductor complex and preserving both Gemelli, obturator internus and piriformis tendons (quadriceps coxae), Prof. Lee is able to offer his patients better mobility and a much faster recovery. Research has shown, for example, that these muscles are essential to weight-bearing and propulsive motions: the simple act of getting up from a chair is made more difficult without them.

At his new clinic, Prof. Lee will also offer consultations for patients who would like to discuss non-surgical alternatives to hip replacement. As an orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, he has treated UK premiership footballers. He is also a widely respected advocate of cell therapy and is a member of the International Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Society.
