Local Marketing Expert Says Business Owners Ignore Benefits of Online Reviews

A local marketing expert urges local business owners to seek online reviews because he says without them, they aren't likely to attract much new business.

Most people read online reviews before visiting a store or buying a product, but a local marketing expert says many local business owners aren’t doing enough to get them. And that, he says, is costing them a whole lot of new business.

“Getting online reviews is a new concept for local business owners,” says a spokesman from FindUsLocal.com, an online local business directory that shows each visitor a customized page with local events, news, shops, and restaurants from their city or town. “And that’s a shame, because if local stores and restaurants don’t have sufficient online reviews, they’re not going to see the foot traffic they want to.”

He quotes statistics to back up his statement like one from a study that shows more than half of consumers read online reviews before visiting a store, and one that shows 88 percent of people trust online reviews as much as they do a personal recommendation from friends or family members.

“The bottom line,” he says, “is that local business owners need online reviews just as much as online businesses do.”

He says the best way to get them is to set up a free local business listing and then send customers to it to leave online reviews. “It’s not that difficult to get them,” he says. “Another study shows that more than 70 percent of people will leave them if asked.”
