DATELINE: Kihei, December 11, 2020 — For Immediate Release!
With extensive COVID-19 pandemic health and safety precautions in place, Kapalua, Maui prepares for an important event of the PGA Tour. The resort community welcomes the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions. This year, the annual tournament will occur during a four day period extending from January 7th through January 10th. Sponsors plan to permit a limited number of spectators. The GOLF Channel will televise the competition.
A Popular Annual Golfing Tournament
Conducted at the lovely Kapalua Plantation Golf Course in West Maui, this golfing competition marks the first PGA event of the year. Professional golfers who earned victories in PGA tournaments during 2020 (or who qualified due to special calendar changes resulting from the coronavirus pandemic) will compete in Kapalua during this prestigious tournament.
Sponsors offer limited corporate hospitality to accommodate players and their family members at the Kapalua Resort. Spectators may purchase tickets for the event through the PGA website. An anticipated 200 to 300 spectators will watch the competition daily in person from an Aloha Club outdoor venue adjoining the 18th hole. Spectators may purchase either a four-day Aloha Club ticket for $900 or daily Kama’aina Aloha Club tickets for $125.
Public Health And Safety: a Top Priority
The 2021 tournament sponsors developed robust health and safety protocols for everyone entering the golf course to attend this event. They cooperated closely with the PGA Tour, medical experts, and government agencies in Maui County and the State of Hawaii in drafting these guidelines. Audience members must adhere to stringent protocols in order to watch the tournament in person.
Travelers journeying across the Pacific to visit Kapalua must comply fully with regulations established by the State of Hawaii through its Safe Travels Hawaii program. Additionally, in order to gain entrance to the golf course, visitors must complete a health questionnaire and submit to temperature screening at the gate. Event sponsors require everyone above the age of 2 years to bring masks (with limited health-related exceptions). Spectators from unrelated households must maintain a distance of 6 feet apart from one another. Due to restrictions limiting contact between PGA players and audience members, PGA golfers won’t provide autographs this year.
A Proud Legacy
The acclaimed PGA player Justin Thomas prevailed in this annual tournament during 2020. The 27-year old previously earned first place at Kapalua during 2017, too. He won collegiate golfing matches while attending the University of Alabama, joining the PGA Tour in 2013. His father, Mike Thomas, served as the PGA Pro at Harmony Landing Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky.
The 2020 tournament victor has played in some 160 PGA golfing events during his professional career. He won 13 PGA tournaments, finishing in second place in six others. His achievements include finishing among the top 10 during 57 PGA competitions.
Watch Outstanding Golfers Compete For a Coveted Trophy
The PGA players competing for first place in Kapalua during 2021 include a number of renowned names. Stewart Cink, Brian Gay, Adam Scott, Martin Laird, and Michael Thompson all plan to participate. The annual event appears poised to generate intense public interest!
