Kansas City Plumbing Services Companies Concerned About Growing Plumber Shortage

-- A recent report from Bloomberg finding that the U.S. will be short 550,000 plumbers by 2027 has piqued the interest of local Kansas City plumbing services companies such as John the Plumber, given that the lack of plumbers is already being felt in Kansas. The report also found that 2022’s economic cost of the shortage was $33,000,000,000.

“We often hear the word ‘shortage’ and think of baby formula or bathroom tissue, but it’s extra-alarming when it refers to plumbers in KC,” states John the Plumber’s John Hunt, a Kansas City plumber with more than 30 years of experience to his credit. “The lack of plumbers is definitely being felt here in Kansas, and it ends up affecting everyone’s wallet; to be sure, people end up paying a lot more money for smaller repairs - and even larger repairs - because they call major franchises. Plumbing is one of those areas that remains so essential that when it goes out, or if a home or business springs a leak, for example, people panic. We often advise customers that if they wait a bit more and make a couple of additional phone calls, they might get a better price.”

While one solution is hiring more workers, professionals like Hunt say getting more people into the industry isn’t always easy. Being a hard job from a labor perspective, he says, it’s even that much harder for people wanting to do it - and that’s why there is a shortage of such workers. With all the seasoned plumbers being older and heading into retirement, new generations are not picking up the slack, according to Hunt.

“With high demand and a lack of workers, the best thing citizens can do is take their time before calling a company,” he adds. “Shop it around - there are good, reputable plumbers out there, such as our company; while there is a shortage of them, it’s imperative to cross-shop the aforementioned reputable businesses because it’s the customer who takes the biggest hit.”

To combat the shortage issue, experts like Hunt suggest traditional methods as job fairs and talking to students at schools, as well as more modern approaches such as creatively attracting young people online. “The hope is with the rising cost of college, we can continue to encourage young people through messaging to take a look at options like apprenticeship programs,” adds Hunt. “The cost is minimal and they learn how to develop the hands-on skills to pursue a good life.”

Plumbing professionals throughout the KC area agree that this is the one trade that stands between citizens and safe drinking water, and that the work plumbers do cuts down on things as serious as disease. Furthermore, the challenge isn’t so much people understanding how important plumbers are in their daily lives, says Hunt, but rather getting across to both educators and young people in a meaningful way to tell them just how rewarding a career as a Kansas City plumber can be.
