Surfing is regarded as one of the fastest-growing sports in America, a trend that industry experts say is driven by accessibility, Olympic exposure, and the health benefits of the sport; the activity also places surfers in proximity with nature, another factor that experts believe contributes to its popularity.
Intrsxtn Surf is a rapidly growing surf collective that works to meet this heightened demand, especially for new surfers, with an emphasis on women. At the organization’s Only in LA Surf Experience with Airbnb Originals, Jessa Williams and Tre’lan Michael, both of whom have extensive experience in coaching first-time surfers, will offer guidance on fundamental skills.
During the experience Williams and Michael will instruct participants according to Intrsxtn Surf’s proprietary 3C Safe Surf system, which covers the foundations of the sport while addressing possible emotional challenges that first-time surfers may face.
Once participants have been provided with their wetsuits and equipment, they will be walked through a “dry run” on land, during which they will familiarize themselves with basic techniques for paddling, catching waves, and standing up on the board. After all individuals are comfortable, the group will proceed to the ocean, where participants practice getting on and off their board and adjust to the sensation of being on the open water.
Throughout the event, group members will also have the opportunity to request photos and videos with Michael, an international model who has been featured in LA28 Olympic Surf Commercials. These photos will be provided by Williams, who draws upon her experience as an award-winning director to take professional shots suitable for social media.
