-- Will and Grace is not just a T.V. Show as it turns out they are next door neighbors in The Woodlands who both live with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Grace was just 3 years old when she was diagnosed, and Will was diagnosed two years ago, when he was 10 years old. Alan O’Neill, a Type 2 diabetic himself, became familiar with Grace’s story because the O’Neill family is good friends with Graces’ parents.
JDRF 2014 Team Will & Grace
Alan O’Neill shares the story about how he became aware of, and involved with Team Will & Grace and the JDRF One Walk. Alan said, “Our dear friends Nancy and Travis Stricker’s daughter, Grace, was diagnosed with T1D when she was only three years old. And her next door neighbor, Will, found out he had T1D when he was only ten years old. Finding a cure for Diabetes is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. As a Type 2 diabetic myself I know first-hand the struggles of living with this disease, and can only imagine how challenging it must be for young children like these to have to grow up with it.”
“So on Saturday,” Alan continued, “I took part again in the JDRF annual One Walk event which started at the United Methodist Church in The Woodlands. My wife Linda, daughter Emma, and son-in-law Connor joined me, along with several others who joined ‘Team Will & Grace’ but there were dozens of other teams as well. My guess is several hundred joined in to walk. And our team, ‘Will & Grace’ successfully raised over $8,000 and counting, which more than doubled their goal of $3,000 dollars. We couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout and support, and would encourage everyone to donate and join in next year. It’s a very worthy cause.”
Because of Type 1 Diabetes, Will and Grace’s pancreases don’t produce insulin, which everybody needs to digest the food eaten. So there are blood sugar test 5-10 times a day for type 1 diabetics, by pricking of the fingers.
Most people diagnosed with T1 Diabetes must wear insulin pumps 24 hours a day 7 days per week, which provides the insulin needed to stay healthy. They must pay careful attention to diet, exercise, sleep and a lot of other things in order to keep a balance between blood sugar lows and highs.
Those wishing to make a donation to Team Will and Grace, or sign up to join the team, collect donations and come walk in support on November 8th. The Walk will be a lot of fun, and powerful to know one can make a difference to kids like Will And Grace who have T1D. Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. It cannot be prevented and there is no cure. JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D. Every dollar JDRF is able to direct toward research comes from donors. Each year, JDRF One Walk™ (formerly JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes) brings together more than 900,000 people to change the future of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Many of these people have T1D themselves, and many more are friends, family, or coworkers of someone challenged by this disease. But no matter what their connection is, they walk because they believe in a world where T1D no longer exists — a world where Type One has become Type None.
