Hootananny Brixton is celebrating its Tenth Anniversary this year, which commemorates ten wonderful and inspiring years at the heart of London’s nightlife. This is a great milestone for the award-winning independent live music venue and pub, which has provided entertainment to music fans and pub lovers for a decade.

Hootananny Brixton started in 2007 after brother and sister business partners, Kit Fraser and Sophia Yates, got together with the aim of creating a venue where, in the words of Sophia Yates, “talents flourish and everyone has an amazing time”.

Hootananny Brixton followed on the success of its sister venue Hootananny Inverness which opened 5 years earlier, and the pair brought some of what they had learned, to revive the previously failing Brixton music pub.

One of the earliest challenges Hootananny Brixton faced was to transform an out of the way empty old Victorian pub, into a vibrant live music venue and pub, that is now renowned for its programme of international and local bands and djs, and continually draws customers from all over London and beyond.

While every business of course faces challenges, some, like Hootananny Brixton are fortunate enough to have enjoyed real successes, and victories relatively early on in its history.

Sophia Yates, the Hootananny Brixton Owner, was quoted when discussing some of their early wins:

“One of the high points of Hootananny Brixton’s history so far, was when we won Best Live Music Pub at the Great British Pub Awards in 2010, which gave us even more determination to keep improving the venue, and hosting great events. This was then quickly followed by us winning the London Lifestyle Awards Best Music Venue in 2011, and then in 2014 we became a TimeOut London, Love London Awards Winner! These awards have definitely spurred us on, as have all the great reviews we continue to receive from our loyal customers.”

Sophia Yates is thrilled with the journey so far, and happily explains that:

“Hootananny Brixton now has a reputation for excellence and stands out as an incredible London venue for live musicians and DJs. We are also a great pub with a non-corporate vibe for drinkers, even when the pub is not hosting musicians. The pub is complemented by our huge beer garden, sizzling street food, 3 pool tables, candle lit tables, and our winter Friday night Free comedy club. All in all, I’m very happy with what we have achieved so far but of course we are always striving to get even better “

Hootananny Brixton proudly boasts to hosting multiple live music bands at least 5 nights a week, where well-loved talented musicians from the UK’s festival circuit get to perform in a 850 people capacity venue, to an up for it crowd. Entrance to the venue is always free before 10pm, and it’s £5 on a Friday or £7 on a Saturday after 10pm, to drink and see three live bands, and dance to top quality Djs till 3am. As a result Hootananny Brixton has built up a loyal crowd of regulars who are able to enjoy some of the best of London’s nightlife for a very affordable price.

Over the coming year visitors to the venue will be able to hear a diverse programme of music ranging from hip hop artists, latin funk and jazz, dubstep, Balkan beats, Afrobeat, roots rock reggae bands, electro-swing outfits, house and techno Dj’s, world music artists, singer songwriters and often lots of brass. There are also some special events planned which will be announced in the near future.

Hootananny Brixton’s founder Sophia Yates says:

“We’re delighted to be celebrating our ten Year Anniversary. I believe the uniqueness of the building itself with its huge windows and rooms bulging with character, and its big beer garden, combined with the amazing quality of the musicians who play here, is what people love. Backing up these two great assets is our fabulous team of managers and promoters. Right now we are refreshing Hoots with beautiful new Moroccan lamps and plants suspended from the ceiling, new booths and tables, a new range of drinks and glasses and a cocktail mixologist to be employed in the spring. We will also be refurbishing our beer garden and opening the boundary wall with new gates to enhance the feel of an open and welcoming pub as well as live music venue. We want to give our customers a legendary live experience in one of the best pubs and live venues in London, and we are always listening and responding to our customers to make sure this happens.”.

Hootananny Brixton currently consists of 120 part-time and full-time employees and freelance staff and has big plans for the upcoming year. One of their core objectives is to keep drawing people from all over London, Europe and Internationally, and to keep working hard to ensure they provide the top quality entertainment that people love.

Hootananny Brixton would also like to thank friends, customers and all their partners for their well wishes on this happy occasion.
