Home Generator Trend Not Just Paranoia

With the sprawling suburbias or the GTA many developers are including or considering home generator units for their upcoming properties in development. This trend is coming as an add-on appliance that has many benefits besides the peace of mind when purchasing a new property; they offer safe stand-by power for black outs which can come at times where preventative measures should be taken. It is logical preparation, not paranoia.

Sump Pumps and heating systems are more necessary to be constantly operational for obvious reasons. A disabled sump pump could cause thousands of dollars of damage to a property if heavy rainfall occurs. In the midst of winter’s chilling temperatures, a power outage usually forces families or homeowners to relocate or seek alternative heating sources, often more outdated and hazardous. Powerless refrigeration units will lead to spoiled food sometimes within hours. That can be costly.

The cons of not being equipped with backup power are more various than above, and for the $5-$12,000 expense the installation is a feature that most realtors are suggesting or up-selling with new residential developments. Model selection is based on amount of desired appliances connected and square footage of the home that can be sectionally heated.

“Installing a standby generator comes with regulations and must be done correctly.” says Kim Laird-Hurst of Laird and Son Heating and Cooling; they work with the brand name Generac.

“Most municipalities do not allow them to be installed in front of the home, within five feet of a door, and must rest on a bed of gravel. There are other restrictions that make it even more important to have a certified specialist assess your property.” she adds.

The standby models switch off once power is restored, and the connection is open to the grid. There are natural gas, propane and gasoline models available on the market as well.
