While the above-average snowpack level in the Okanagan mountains has many businesses and homeowners concerned about flooding, local landscapers are seeing nothing but opportunity. When Lake Okanagan’s banks swelled last summer, landscaping businesses were kept busy repairing lawns, parks, and other and green spaces affected by the water levels—by all appearances given the current snow levels (not to mention the amount of snow in the upcoming forecast), 2018 will be no different, making landscaping an appealing new business or personal venture for many Kelowna residents.
The increase in landscape trailers being sold at local trailer dealers seems to corroborate this opinion, indicating that more and more Kelowna residents are gearing up to defend their properties from the impending floods. Local trailer dealer BC Cargo Trailers agrees, noting that “the uptick in landscape trailer sales sure shows that folks are concerned about the flooding, and are looking to be prepared this year with their gear rather than scrambling like last summer”.
Whether locals are buying landscape trailers because they are worried about their own lawns, or looking to capitalize on the inevitable demand for landscape services, dealers in the area are thrilled at the uptick in demand. Landscape trailers, while useful for personal and residential purposes, are typically used for commercial ventures. With local dealers selling them in such high volumes at the moment, it implies there is increasing interest in commercial landscaping ventures in the Okanagan.
This is unsurprising given the real estate market in Kelowna, which was recently reported to be one of the only markets in Canada that has yet to be negatively affected by the new mortgage rules. With a number of new developments going in over the next few months, commercial landscapers who make their business in the Okanagan are likely to be busy, with plenty of opportunities for new businesses and freelancers to capitalize on the inevitable flood damage landscaping efforts that will need to be undertaken in the summer.
