Teachers in culturally diverse classrooms can create a welcoming environment by displaying multicultural posters that say Welcome, Thank You and Hello in different languages. “One of the first things a child will notice when they enter a new classroom is the way it looks,” says Anneke Forzani, President of Language Lizard. “Newcomers who do not speak English well, and children from different cultural backgrounds, may not feel they fit in if they see only the English language and limited ethnic diversity on the walls. If these children see their culture represented, they will feel more welcome and acknowledged.”
Forzani recommends that teachers consider decorating multicultural classrooms by displaying photos depicting people from other countries, artwork from students representing their culture or home country, and multilingual signs and posters depicting themes the class will be studying.
