Dr. Victor Schacher, Renowned Orthodontist, Discusses Psychological Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment
Dr. Schacher, owner of Schacher Orthodontics, Hamilton, ON, is an avid proponent of early orthodontic treatment, or dentofacial orthopaedics. Combining his expertise in physical anthropology (human growth and development) and orthodontics, he works with young patients to re-direct jaw growth and restore facial harmony.
Early orthopedic treatment should be done between the ages of four and six, when there are still no permanent teeth. This, after all, is jaw treatment, not tooth treatment. Early treatment has the potential to eliminate the future need for jaw surgery and permanent tooth extractions. Dr Schacher believes “early treatment can change the way the world sees your child, and how your child sees the world.”
At Schacher Orthodontics in Hamilton, Dr. Schacher and his team emphasize the psychological as well as physical impact of delaying treatment. An event from his early years in orthodontics involving a four year old girl helped guide his focus. In his words:
“She was ok to have X-rays and tooth impressions taken… When we took out the camera to take photos she began to cry” says Dr. Schacker.. Her mother explained she knew what pictures were and she was very sensitive to her picture being taken. A well-meaning aunt had recently said, “She doesn’t look that bad.”
From this experience grew a desire to “nip avoidable psychological problems in the bud,” states Dr. Schacher. To learn more about early orthodontic treatment, call Schacher Orthodontics in Hamilton, ON at 905-545-3021 or visit their website:
In the words of Dr. Schacher: “When a child is young these issues can be fixed with simple, noninvasive, nonsurgical dentofacial orthopedics – why would you wait?”
