On September 20 & 21 from 4:30-6:00 in Vienna’s Opernpassage, Vienna Philharmonic Principal Cellist Tamás Varga joins “Bach in the Subways” Founder, famous cellist Dale Henderson to perform guerrilla classical music concerts.

Attracted by Dale Henderson’s inspired act of rebellion against traditional classical music boundaries, Tamás Varga is not alone. A leader in one of the world’s most elite, venerable, and oldest orchestras, Varga is among thousands of musicians around the globe of every skill level, nationality, and age – pros, amateurs and students – who join Henderson every year in his unorthodox vision to “sow the seeds for future generations of classical music lovers.” Earlier this year actor and cellist Dermot Mulroney performed with Henderson in Los Angeles. Henderson’s fight to save classical music began in 2010 when he embarked upon an impassioned campaign of “Bach in the Subways” performances in New York City. Amidst dwindling classical music audiences, shrinking market, major orchestra closures, and regular budget cuts to arts organizations and education, Henderson was convinced that too few people have the chance to experience live classical music. Discarding traditional boundaries for the artform, Henderson stripped away all cultural and artificial barriers that prevent peoples’ natural appreciation for the music he loves. Public performances were open & accessible to all, no admission fee required, and Henderson accepted no money during performances.

Quickly attracting attention from CNN, Wall Street Journal, and celebrities like Branford Marsalis, Henderson leveraged the momentum to invite other musicians to join the cause. Five years later Henderson had grown his solo project into a global music movement. Since 2015, 1000s of musicians in 100s of cities in over 40 countries join him in rejuvenating classical music audiences for Bach’s birthday.
