-- Mission Connection has announced its Mindset Test, an online screening tool intended to help individuals determine their mindset type and whether it is conducive to personal growth. The test was developed based on research by Stanford psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck, whose work focuses on the origins of self-perception, its role in motivation, and how it affects success and fulfillment in life.

Stanford University defines mindset as the collection of assumptions that an individual holds about their life and the situations that surround it. These belief systems are thought to help the brain simplify complex events and worldviews into digestible information that can guide the individual, enabling them to set expectations and plan for the future. Research by Stanford University and other sources has found that mindset is correlated with success and that changing a negative perspective into a more positive set of beliefs may help people better achieve their goals.

Dr. Carol Dweck groups belief systems on personal development into two categories: “fixed” mindsets and “growth” mindsets. As Mission Connection explains, people with the “fixed” perspective tend to view talents and skills as innate and unchangeable, unable to be learned or improved over time; on the other hand, those with “growth” mindsets are more open to change and view challenges and failures as learning experiences that can be used to improve themselves. As such, individuals with a fixed mindset may constrain themselves due to limiting beliefs, leading to losses in opportunities.

However, experts believe that mindsets can be changed as long as a person is aware of their tendencies. Mission Connection’s online Mindset Test was designed for this purpose: the quiz asks the individual about their views on skill acquisition, challenges, criticism, and failure in a series of 10 short questions. Their score will determine whether they tend towards fixed perspectives or a growth-oriented mindset, allowing them to make changes where necessary.

Mission Connection notes that personal growth can be hampered by past experiences, trauma, or mental illnesses. If the individual believes their mindset is impacting their lifestyle but is unable to change it because of the aforementioned issues, they are advised to consider seeking professional mental health services.
