Last week Google announced that the roll out of the new Penguin 4.0 update is complete. The update was launched September 24. The previous 3.0 version was from 2 years ago, October of 2014. This update is unique in that it has become part of the core algorithm and the penalties are done in real time. This means that if websites correct the issues causing the penalty the website get released from the penalty without having to wait until the next update.
The penalty works by looking at websites that have over optimized their search engine optimization. The acronym is SEO. For years Google has tried to do battle with spammers that over optimize their sites to gain the system. This has been the prototypical cat and mouse game. Google wants to offer quality content to their users while the SEO industry makes big profits offering services to rank businesses on top of Google’s search results.
The SEO industry is estimated to be worth $65 Billion and has experienced huge growth recently. Projections of it becoming an $80 Billion industry by 2020 are not that outlandish. Recent polling suggests that over 90% of firms plan to increase their SEO budgets next year. The conclusion is that budgets wouldn’t be increasing if it wasn’t profitable.

Also of importance is that most clients seem to be mainly interested in getting listed in the Google maps three pack also known as the “Snack Pack.” They expect Google to modify the snack pack results to become paid advertising spots.
For businesses concerned with their Google rankings, it’s important to note that Facebook actually has more traffic than Google. Paid traffic on Facebook is a lot more economical.
