Chris Daniels & The Kings featuring Freddi Gowdy from Freddi Henchi and the Soulsetters “Funky To the Bone” (Moon Voyage Records), album release celebration Where: Herman’s Hideaway – Chris Daniels & The Kings featuring Freddi Gowdy with the Hazel Miller Band When: February 14, 2015 (Valentines Day) .

Why is this important: “Funky To The Bone” marks the return of Colorado’s first grand master of Funk n Roll, Freddi Gowdy, in this “Sam & Dave meets Tower of Power” type of collaboration with Chris Daniels. It’s the first studio album for the Kings in eight years and the first album for Freddi since the Freddi Henchi Band recorded at Caribou Ranch in the 1980s. And that’s not all! There are number of reasons this is a remarkable story: *

Daniels and Gowdy are alive. It’s been almost five years since Daniels was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (thanks to a bone marrow transplant via stem cells from his sister Jane) and 15 years since Gowdy underwent cancer treatment for prostate cancer). This album is a celebration of life, survival, and the amazing fun of Funky To The Bone. *

The music on the album has a theme, a sound and a remarkable cast of supporters who got involved in the album because they believed in the project. The theme is celebration, humor, funk and fun.

The sound is the classic sound (Sly & The Family Stone meets Chicago 67’ with a pinch of the Saturday Night Live Band) in a Sam & Dave type collaboration. * An amazing cast of characters came out to help Freddi and Chris get the album completed including Billy Payne from Little Feat and Leftover Salmon on B3 and piano, Hazel Miller, Carl Carwell and Coco Brown on background vocals, Christian Teele from E-Town on percussion, Chris Kimmel on Hip Hop vocals, Bob Rebholz, Darren Kramer and Carlos Chavez joining the Kings horn section of Darryl Abrahamson and Jim Waddell, the Kings – Randy Amen, Kevin Lege, Bones Jones, and the amazing engineering of John McVey and mastering of Bob Ludwig (Springsteen, Clapton etc.) And a host of supporters and fans on kickstarter that helped make this dream a reality. *

The packaging for this CD and vinyl album is from gifted artist Greg Carr who is known for his work on several Steve Martin albums along with DeVochka, Hard Working Americans and so many more BACKGROUND *

Chris Daniels was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame with Judy Collins in the class of 2013 and he was a co-writer and soloist for a Grammy-nominated children’s album that year. Chris Daniels & the Kings celebrated their 30th year in 2014 and will return to Europe for their 21st tour in May 2014. Chris serves as the “Area Head” for the Music Business Program at the College of Arts & Media at the University of Colorado Denver where he received the Award for Excellence in Teaching from CAM 2011. * Freddi Gowdy is a founding member of the 60s soul duo “Freddi Henchi (Henchi Graves) and the Soulsetters. They evolved out of the Phoenix, Arizona band “The Jokers” in 1966.

Discovered and nurtured by a local radio disc jockey and producer named Hadley Murrell “The Crown Princes of Funk” moved to L.A. and signed various record deals – eventually with Warner/Reprise who released their first album “Dance.” Because of that album and numerous singles the band toured the US becoming the party-masters of the college circuit.

Despite the band’s albums and singles they never got the airplay they deserved. In 1970 Freddi and Henchi moved to Colorado where Caribou Studios and Feyline Concerts gave them them recording time and opening act slots on major shows with the likes of James Brown, Steely Dan, Billy Joel, Elton John, and Tina Turner to name only a few. The Soulsetters, and later the Freddi Henchi Band, were the hottest funk-machine west of the Mississippi.

After Henchi Graves death from cancer in 2009 Fred and Chris connected at a COMHF event and the rest, as they say is history. Last summer they performed over 70 shows including closing out the City Park Jazz Concert Series in front of an estimated 14,000 people.
