Fresh-Roasted Coffee Better For Health Than Pre-Ground/Instant, Says New Report

A new report from Coffee Lover, a custom bean roasting company, reveals that a mug of morning joe made from freshly ground beans offers more health benefits than cups made from ground coffee or powder. The company released a report exploring these findings.

-- When it comes to coffee, instant and pre-ground java can’t compare with the flavor of brew made from freshly roasted beans. And the same may be true for its health benefits, according to a new report from custom coffee bean roaster Coffee Lover.

The report comes as an increasing number of Americans express a desire to build healthy eating and drinking habits. In a recent survey from the International Food Information Council, more than half of respondents reported trying to follow a healthy eating plan, and a third wished to protect their long-term health.

Coffee is one of the most frequently consumed products in the United States, with 64 percent of adults drinking it daily, Coffee Lover representatives say. And drinking coffee from freshly roasted beans can yield greater health benefits than consuming joe made from packaged grounds or instant powder, according to the report.

All sources of coffee contain antioxidants, but freshly roasted beans contain higher levels of these natural substances, the report states. Antioxidants protect against free radical cell damage, which can lead to cancer and heart disease.

Ground coffee, in fact, is known to contain free radicals, according to a study from the scientific nutrition journal Food Chemistry. Free radical content increased in just one month when ground coffee was stored while exposed to oxygen, according to the Food Chemistry study. Stored beans did not undergo the same degree of changes, the study determined.

Freshly roasted coffee beans are believed to contain a higher concentration of caffeine than older ground coffee or processed instant coffee, according to the Coffee Lover report. Coffee also blocks adenosine - a substance that triggers drowsiness - and stimulates adrenal glands, two more reasons the stimulant energizes consumers.

Besides delivering a jolt of energy, coffee is commonly believed to improve short-term memory. But it can also help prevent cognitive challenges like Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia, according to Coffee Lover’s report.

Statistics show that a morning cup of joe is non-negotiable for the majority of American adults. Using freshly roasted beans helps consumers avoid any added sugars, flavors or artificial additives. It’s an investment in one’s day, as well as one’s health, a Coffee Lover representative said.

“By choosing to drink coffee that is freshly roasted, you will be able to retain many more health benefits from your cup of coffee,” a company official said. “It is important that you drink them in a natural and pure form. Otherwise, you may not get the same benefits.”

Coffee Lover was founded by coffee aficionado Scott Hall, who started the roasting business with a workbench and a one-pound roaster. The company is passionate about creating coffee roasts for every palate.
