The plot of “Hawaiian Wildflower” follows the characters Maylea Kanaka, a young woman of otherworldly beauty, and Dillon West, a happily married accountant with a young son. When Maylea leaves Oahu and appears in Dillon’s hometown of Lubbock, Texas, her designs on him turn his family upside down.

While Dillon is initially taken with Maylea’s allure, he soon realizes that her beauty masks an inner ugliness. As the story unfolds, the fearful Dillon realizes Maylea's past must be discovered. The drama culminates when her secrets are revealed, guiding readers to what Johansen believes to be a satisfying ending.

“Everybody knows that the world is full of evildoers. But in most mystery novels, at the end, the good guys win, the bad guys lose, and all is right in the world,” says Johansen. “If you avoid murder mysteries and crime stories, I understand. I’ve been there. But I can assure you that in my stories, there will be a satisfying conclusion. The bad guys will be apprehended, and the ‘why’ will always be explained.”

As with Johansen’s other books, “Hawaiian Wildflower” does not contain foul language, highly sexual content, or graphic violence, reflecting her commitment to writing compelling mysteries without relying on suggestive themes. As a result, the story is suitable for readers of all ages.
