-- Exploring Careers with Kids released a short video providing a brief introduction to what civil engineers do in their careers. The video was released to provide parents and grandparents with a short video to share the joy of engineering with kids during Engineers Week 2018. The aim of Exploring Careers with Kids is to provide fun books with useful information to parents and grandparents working to help young kids learn about careers. The video can be found on YouTube at the following link: What Do Civil Engineers Do? A Short Video For Kids – Engineers Week 2018.

While it may seem unusual to some, Exploring Careers with Kids chooses to focus on helping parents and grandparents share knowledge of careers with their children and grandchildren. The book ABCs of Civil Engineering focuses on the words of civil engineering. Currently, the United States is producing less engineers and many are worried about the continued development of the nation. During National Engineers Week, from February 18-24, 2018, there is a focus on helping people explore engineering with children to encourage them to learn more about this profession. An example of this effort includes the iMAX film, Dream Big.

Exploring Careers with Kids got its start in 2016, founded by Ben Willardson. The idea for the site came about when Ben decided to write books to help kids learn more about different careers. He is the father of five active children and works as a civil engineer. He graduated from Utah State University with a Master’s Degree and went on to earn a PhD at the University of Southern California while working full-time and raising the kids. Ben started his career as a paper boy and has worked many jobs including: farm hand, lawn care professional, coal miner, customer service representative, researcher, and engineer. He enjoys spending time with his family, camping, fishing, hunting, reading, playing basketball, and learning new skills. Some of these include flint knapping, leather work, and water color painting. Ben is passionate about his kids and engineering.
